I cannot believe God is cruel, nor do I think that fear is an appropriate response to God's will. What does fear have to do with our anticipation of God's kingdom? Nothing, except for the fear of missing it altogether because we refuse to participate in it, or of not paying attention to it when it is right under our noses. "Don't be afraid," Jesus again and again tells his followers in the Gospels. " God's kingdom, which comes according to God's will, is a gift, not a nightmare of coercion. God desires our life and not our death.

Rather, in the two or three centuries around the birth of Jesus, there had been a widespread expectation among Jesus' fellow Jews that God was about to inaugurate God's rule after first bringing the world to a cataclysmic end. We students, however, understood that these beliefs were the result of a misunderstanding of the pure prophetic religion of ancient Israel. The prophets, of course, had threatened that the Day of the Lord was coming when God would judge the people, but they had not meant at the end of time in the way I had learned in Pond Fork.
